Q: Peux-tu nous donner une brève description ?
Mon nom est Adrian. Je viens d'une petite laiterie en Tasmanie, Australie et j'ai 26 ans. Je travaille pour Internet Brands depuis 2 ans. Avant cela, je travaillais pour la compagnie Ford Motor en Australie comme ingénieur en développement produits. Et avant cela, je travaillais dans une manufacture comme superviseur de maintenance où je surveillais les opérations de beaucoup de grosses machines.
J'ai administré un forum vBulletin pendant environ 5 ans et j'ai utilisé ce produit en tant qu'utilisateur pendant une très longue période.
Q: Quelles activités aimes-tu faire pour te relaxer ?
J'adore toutes les activités qui se déroulent à l'extérieur. Voyager, nager, faire des randonnées et faire de la moto sont quelques-unes de mes activités favorites. Comme activités intérieures, j'aime cuisiner (et manger !), écouter de la musique et regarder un bon film ou la Formule 1.
Q:Peux-tu résumer ton expérience pour nous ?
J'ai une licence en ingénierie mécanique ainsi qu'en licence en affaires. J'ai également une certification commerciale en machinerie CNC – cela n'a aucun intérêt pour vBulletin mais cela signifie que je peux produire des morceaux d'aluminium brillant. Mes expériences personnelles m'ont permis d'apprendre à gérer des forums et le marketing social.
Q: Peux-tu décrire ce que tu fais sur une base quotidienne et/ou hebdomadaire ?
Je ne suis pas certain de pouvoir décrire ce que je fais (ne répétez pas ceci à mon chef !!!). Je suis un peu un « facilitateur ». Je dois m’assurer que notre service clientèle et les équipes de développement travaillent vers des objectifs que nos clients estiment profitables et qui seront également profitables dans le futur.
Q: Quel étais ton role au sain de l'équipe internet Brands.com ?
J’aide dans les opérations sur vBulletin. Je surveille également les communautés sur +/- 90 forums appartenant à Internet Brands.
Q: Avez-vous de d'autres photos de la nouvelles équipe ?
Non mais c’est une bonne idée. Je vais voir quelles photos embarrassantes je peux trouver. Héhé
Q: Quelles sont les erreurs communes des administrateurs de forums que tu as pu voir ?
Erreurs de stratégie. Ils ne prennent pas de recul et ne comprennent pas la direction de leur forum/site. Qu’essayent-ils de faire ? Et par la suite, comment chaque action qu’ils font va aider à faire cela ?
Je crois que beaucoup d’admins de forums s’occupent de trop des interactions “quotidiennes” de leurs membres et ratent souvent de grandes possibilités de faire évoluer leur site. C’est du au fait qu’ils sont trop impliqués émotionnellement lorsqu’ils traitent avec des membres, qu’ils disent que leur forum ne couvre pas certains sujets car ils n’en valent pas la peine, qu’ils ne tirent pas parti des nouvelles formes de marketing (twitter/facebook, …)
Q: Quels sont les sites que tu visites pour le fun et la relaxation ?
En-dehors de vbulletin.com et les sites que je surveille, j’aime evo.co.uk vu que je suis un féru d’automobiles et que la qualité du contenu de ce site n’a pas d’égal.
Je trouve que mashable.com est une bonne ressource. J’aime aussi theadminzone.com et webmasterworld.com pour en apprendre plus.
Q: Qu'est-ce que tu sais maintenant que tu aurais souhaité savoir il y a 10 ans ?
Les cours de l’action Google. J Plus sérieusement, pas grand chose. Nous apprenons constamment de nouvelles choses et être déçu que tu aurais du les apprendre plus tôt signifie ton but n’est pas d’apprendre plus.
Q: Connais-tu notre site de support francais et si oui, qu'en pense tu ? des conseils ?
Pour être honnête, je ne suis pas familier du site mais je continue à apprendre un tas de choses. Je l’ai visité quand tu me l’as mentionné et je l’aime beaucoup. Il a un très beau skin vB4 je trouve. Je n’ai pas réellement de conseil pour le moment, vous avez l’air de faire un beau boulot. C’est vraiment un forum actif. C’est formidable de voir une telle communauté de support pour les utilisateurs francophones de vBulletin et pour moi, il démontre bien la grande valeur des forums comme ressource technique et support de réseau.
Q: Quel à été ton chemin pour arriver à intégrer l'équipe de internetbrands.com et pourquoi à tu décider de participer à ce projet?
J’ai commence comme gestionnaire de communauté sur les forums cites précédemment. Je suis vraiment un grand “fan” des forums et en particulier vBulletin (en-dehors du travail sur le programme en lui-même, j’adore vbulletin). Dans ce rôle, j’ai aide dans le deployment de vBulletin sur +/- 50 de ces sites (ils utilisent tous des programmes de plateforme différents), tout comme aider à l’expansion de notre produit, guider dans les initiatives marketing et de communication, et s’assurer que les choses se déroulent le façon la plus harmonieuse qu’il soit.
J’ai eu la chance qu’on m’offre la possibilité de travailler sur vBulletin et rien ne pouvait me rendre plus heureux que de travailler que quelque chose que j’adore. J’espère utiliser beaucoup de choses que j’ai appris sur les forums, tout comme mon expérience dans le développement de produits pour améliorer l’expérience que nous donnons à nos clients.
Q: Un addon est-il prévu ? (Galerie ?!)
Si je regarde vBulletin, je crois qu’il y a des possibilités d’extension de nos fonctionnalités existantes.
Les galeries photos sont probablement la plus grande possibilité. Je sais que les galeries sont critiques pour beaucoup de communautés et ajoutent un élément supplémentaire à la communauté en créant un nouvel addon. Cependant, tout est question de priorité et je trouve les galeries très importantes mais pas la plus importante pour le moment.
Q: Comment gère tu une équipe ?
Pour la plupart, je les laisse se gérer elles-mêmes. J’ai la chance de travailler avec des gens capables et ma gestion est limitée à simplement s’assurer qu’elles ont les outils pour faire leur travail et s’en sortir toute seule. Tout le monde peut avoir des problèmes ou prendre parfois le mauvais chemin et je pense que le rôle du gestionnaire est d’encourager les discussions ouvertes afin d’aider à solutionner les problèmes et aider à comprendre quels objectifs nous essayons d’atteindre. Parfois, quand les problèmes sont très sérieux, je pense qu’il est important de se retrousser les manches et montrer l’exemple pour s’assurer que vous connaissez les tâches quotidiennes que vos équipes doivent effectuées.
Q: Quel est la première chose que tu fasse en te levant et la dernière en te couchant ?
Ce sont les mêmes. Regardez mes e-mails.
Q: On parle de plus en plus de IPB, qu'en pense tu ?
Je pense que c’est un bon programme. J’ai eu la chance d’utiliser plusieurs types de programmes différents pour un forum en tant qu’admin, beaucoup d’entre eux sont bons. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas utilise IPB mais j’aime l’utiliser comme simple utilisateur. J’aime leur système de photos en particulier. Vu que j’adore les forums, j’apporte une grande importance à la “progression” des forums et à leur évolution avec l’Internet. Je trouve qu’ils ont un plus grand rôle à jouer dans l’Internet que le rôle qu’on leur donne souvent et avoir un environnement difficile et compétitif est critique pour s’assurer que les forums font effectivement une “progression”.
Q: Quel est ton hack favoris ? un fais par toi et un qui n'est pas de toi !
C’est comme choisir son enfant favori. Je vais en choisir plusieurs si je peux.
Je trouve le hack “Thank you” très bien car il est extrêmement simple. Tout comme le “Gestionnaire de sous-forums”.
Le hack iTrader est vraiment très utile (et populaire) sur les sites que je surveille.
Q: Des changements sont-ils prévu sur vBulletin.org ?
Nous n’avons aucun changement drastique de prévu pour le moment. Nous voulons le maintenir comme il est pour le moment. Le site va bientôt passer à vBulletin 4. Comme je passe plus de temps à essayer de comprendre cette communauté et à comment nous pouvons les servir mieux, il pourrait y avoir des changements.
Q: Quel sont t'es livres, films, musiques, jeux, nourriture favorite ?
Livres, j’aime “This I believe”. Je le trouve vraiment réfléchi et c’est fascinant de comprendre ce en quoi les gens croient. J’ai aussi Homage à Catalonia de George Orwell.
Films, Le Parrain 1 et 2. En films récents, “Into the wild”, “Gran Torino”, “Lost in Translation”, “Lantana”, et j’aime la série des films français “Taxi”.
Musique, Cela varie d’un jour à l’autre et ça peut être éclectique. Les Beatles sont en tête de liste. D’autres seraient De La Soul, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, New Order ou alors BB King , Camile, Cubanismo, Lupe Fiasco, Ben Harper, Atmosphere, The Cat Empire…..
Jeux, j’aime l’aspect social de jouer à des jeux.J’aime tout, depuis des jeux de sociétés comme Puerto Rico jusqu’à un jeu comme Canasta. Pour moi, le plus important, ce sont les personnes avec qui tu es, plus que le jeu lui-même. Par ailleurs, j’admets que j’aime la compétition et je suis mauvais perdant.
Nourriture, tout ! Particulièrement ce qui est cuit au barbecue et ce qui contient des pâtes.
Q: Ou te voit tu dans 10 ans ?
Pas certain. Je crois que ma réponse sera erronée quoi que je te réponde. Si tu me l’avais demandé 10 ans auparavant, je t’aurais dit que je serais à Los Angeles en train de travailler sur des forums. J’adore cependant aider les gens et essayer d’en obtenir le meilleur, et j’adore l’industrie Internet. C'est incroyablement passionnant et à ce stade, c’est heureusement quelque chose qui englobe ces deux aspects mais à une plus grande échelle.
Q: Si tu étais le directeur de Internet Brands, que changerais-tu ?
Je voudrais que nous soyons plus agressif dans le suivi des tendances de l’usage d’Internet. Nous sommes doué pour identifier les compagnies qui sont à la pointe dans leur catégorie respective sur l’Internet et à les intégrer. Je voudrais nous voir plus impliqué à être à la pointe. Je pense que nous avons beaucoup de connaissances, basées sur nos expériences d’acquisition de ces compagnies et je pense que c’est la connaissance et l’expérience que nous pouvons influencer pour accélérer le développement Internet vers un environnement plus sémantique.
Q: Pourquoi n'y a t-il pas encore de site vBulletin Francais Officiel ?
Nous avons beaucoup de marches qui pourraient bénéficier de leur propre site official. Le site francophone est dans le haut de notre liste, nous avons beaucoup de clients francophones enthousiastes et ce serait bien de pouvoir les servir dans un cadre amélioré. Je voudrais y arriver, cependant, je ne sais pas quand cela sera. Actuellement, nous nous sommes consacrés corps et âme au développement de notre produit vBulletin. Dans le futur, nous consacrerons plus de temps à trouver comment nous pouvons supporter les zones régionales.

Q: Dis nous quelque chose à propos de toi que nous ne savon pas déjà ?
Quand j’étais à l’école supérieure, mon prof de musique (qui m’a enseigné la batterie pendant 2 ans) a appelé mes parents pour leur dire ces mots-ci : Votre fils n’a pas de musicalité et n’a aucun rythme. Le coeur brisé, mon souhait le plus cher de devenir le prochain Bernard Purdie s’est évaporé devant moi. Je pense au soulagement de nos voisins.
Q: Que voudrais-tu ajouter ?
J’espère que tout le monde est excité comme moi à propos de vB 4.0.4. Je crois que ce sera un grand pas en avant dans vBulletin 4.
Q: Donne nous une exclu, une chose que personne ne sait encore sur vB4 !!
Il y a déjà 12000 sites qui tournent avec vBulletin 4, ceci incluant VWvotex, le 15ème plus grand forum. Je trouve ceci formidable pour un produit qui n’ est disponible que depuis 6 mois.

Q: Can you give us a brief bio ?
My name is Adrian – I come from a small dairy farm in Tasmania, Australia, am 26 years old. I have worked for Internet Brands for 2 years, previously I worked at Ford Motor Company in Australia as a Product Development Engineer, previous to that I worked in manufacturing as a maintenance supervisor overseeing the operation of lots of big machines. I have administrated a large vbulletin forum for about 5 years, and used the product for an even longer period as a user.
Q: What activities do you do enjoy for relaxation ?
I love the outdoors, any activity that involves being out there “in it”, I enjoy. Travelling, swimming, hiking, motorcycle riding are some of my favorites though. When indoors I enjoy cooking (and eating!), listening to music and watching a good movie or Formula 1
Q: Can you summarize your educational experience for us ?
I have a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, as well as Bachelor degree in Business. I also have a trade certification in CNC machining – it has no relevance to vbulletin whatsoever, but it means I can whip up some shiny aluminium parts J. I went to the “school of hard knocks” to learn how to manage forums and social marketing.
Q: You describe what you do on a daily and/or weekly basis ?
I am not sure you could describe what I do. (Don’t tell my boss that though!!!) I suppose it is just a “facilitator”. I need to ensure that our customer service and development teams are working towards objectives that our customers see as being valuable, and also will be seen as being valuable in the future too.
Q: What is your role within the internetbrands.com team ?
I help with the operations on vbulletin. I also oversee the communities on about 90 automotive forums that are owned and operated by Internet Brands.

I don’t – but good idea, I will see what embarrassing photos I can get a hold of! hehe
Q: What are the common mistakes you see Forum Administrators making ?
Strategy. Not taking a step back, and understanding the direction of their forum/website. What are they trying to achieve? And subsequently, how does every action they make help achieve that?
I think a lot of forum admins get far too caught up in the “day to day” interaction of their members, and often miss great opportunities for their site to grow. This goes for being too emotionally involved when dealing with members, saying their forum won’t cover certain topics because they don’t think it is worthwhile, not leveraging newer forms of marketing (twitter/facebook etc.).
Q: What Websites do you visit for fun and relaxation ?
Outside of vbulletin.com and the other sites I oversee, I enjoy evo.co.uk as I am a bit of an car enthusiast, and the quality of the content there is without peer. I find mashable.com a great resource, I also like theadminzone.com and webmasterworld.com to learn more from, and I find to be great communities on their own accord.
Q: What do you know now that you would have known 10 years ago ?
Google’s stock price =D. In all seriousness, not a lot, we always learn new things, and to be disappointed that you should have learnt it earlier means you aren’t focusing on learning more.
Q: Do you know our french support site and if yes, what do you think about it ? Some advice ?
I am not familiar with it to be honest – but I am still learning a lot of things. I did check it out when you mentioned it, I like it a lot, it has a really nice vB4 skin I think! I can’t think of any advice currently, it looks like you are doing a great job, it definably seems like an active forum! It is really great to see such a supportive community for fellow French vBulletin users, and to me epitomizes the real great value of forums as a technical resource and “support network”.
Q: What was your path to get to integrate the team internetbrands.com and why you decided to participate in this project?
Well I started as a community manager on the aforementioned automotive forums, I am a really “big fan” of forums, and in particular vbulletin (outside of working on the software, I do love it!). Being in that role, I helped with rolling out of vbulletin software on about 50 of those sites (they all used different software platforms), as well as helping scope the expansion of our feature set, drive marketing and community initiatives, and just ensure things are working as harmoniously as possible. I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to work on vbulletin, and I couldn’t be happier to work on something that I really love. I hope to use a lot of the things that I learnt running the forum sites, as well as my experience in working in product development to improve the experience we give our customers.
Q: An addon is he expected soon ? (gallery ?!)
If I look at vbulletin, I think there are a number of opportunities to expand our existing feature set. Galleries is probably one of the biggest opportunities. I know firsthand that galleries are critical to a lot of communities and add an extra element to a community, creating further addon’s however is all about priorities, and I would see galleries as being very important, but not the most important at this point in time J
Q: How do you manage a team ?
I like to think that I let them (for the most part) manage themselves. I am fortunate enough to work with some really capable people, and I feel that my management is limited to just ensuring that they have the tools to do their job, and getting out of their way. Everyone can get bogged down on issues, or sometimes even start to head down the wrong path, and I think a managers role is to encourage open discussion to help solve the problems, and help them understand what objectives we are trying to achieve. Sometimes when the issues are serious enough, I also think it is important to roll up the sleeves and lead by example too, even just to ensure you have an understanding of what daily tasks your team-mates have to go through.
Q: What is the first thing you do when you wake up and the last before going to bed ?
Both are the same. Check my emails. =DWe speak more and more about IPB, what do you think about it ?

I think it is a great software. I have been fortunate enough to use lots of different types of forum software as an admin, a lot of them are really good! IPB I unfortunately haven’t, but I like using it as a user, I particularly like their gallery system. Being that I love forums, I care a great deal about forum’s “progressing” and evolving with the Internet, I feel they have a much bigger part to play in the Internet than they are often given credit for, and having a strong, competitive environment is critical to ensure that forums do indeed “progress”.
Q: Which hack is your favourite ? Why ?
That’s like choosing your favorite child! I will choose a couple of them if I can.
I like the “Thank You” plugin is great because it is incredibly simple… and effective. As is “Sub-Forum Manager”.
The iTrader plugin is really useful (and popular) on the sites that I oversee as well.
Q: What is the future of vBulletin.org ? Changes are planned ?
At this point, we don’t have any drastic changes planned. We intend on maintaining it as it is for the mean time. The site will be upgraded to vBulletin 4 at a point in time. As I spend more time understanding the community there, and how we can serve them better, there may be changes that get implemented J
Q: What are your favourite books, movies, music, games, food ?
Books, I really like “This I believe”, I find it really reflective, and it is fascinating to understand what people believe in. I also like Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell.
Movies, Godfather 1 and 2. Although more recent favorites include “Into the wild”, “Gran Torino”, “Lost in Translation”, “Lantana”, and I love the French “Taxi” movie series too.

Q: Where do you think you will be in 10 years ?
Not sure. I think, with me, whatever response I give will probably be wrong. If you asked me 10 years ago, the last place I would have told you I would be is in Los Angeles working on forums. I do, however, really enjoy helping people, and trying to get “the best” out of them, and I do love the Internet industry, it is incredibly exciting and fast paced, so at this stage, hopefully something that encompasses both of those aspects, but in a greater capacity.
Q: If you were director to internetbrands, what would you change ?
I would like to see us be more aggressive in following trends in usage on the Internet. We are great at identifying companies that are on the forefront of their respective categories on the Internet, and integrating them. I would like to see us be more involved in actually being on the forefront to begin with – I think we have a lot of knowledge built, based on our experience with acquiring these companies, and I think it is knowledge and experience that we can leverage to accelerate the Internet’s development to a more semantic environment.
Q: Why is there not yet vBulletin French Official site?
We have a lot of markets that would benefit from their own official site, a French one is definitely near the top of our list, we have a lot of really enthusiastic French customers, and it would be great if we could serve them in an improved fashion. I would like to, at some point, to get to that, I don’t know when that would be however. Currently we have been focusing wholeheartedly on the further development of our vbulletin core product, in the future we will definitely spend more time on how we can support regional areas in a stronger fashion.

Q: Can you tell us something about you that we don't already know ?
When I was in Grade 10 at high school, my music teacher (who had taught me drums for 2 years), called my parents in to tell them – in his words “Your son is musically challenged, and has no rhythm”. Heartbroken, my lifelong desire to be the next Bernard Purdie evaporated in front of me, I think to the relief of our neighbors though.
Q: Do you want to add something ?
I hope everyone is as excited as I am about 4.0.4! I think it is going to be a strong step forward with vBulletin4.
Q: Give us exclusivity, something that nobody knows about VB4!
There are over 12,000 sites out there running on it already, including VWvotex, the 15th largest forum out there. Which I find amazing for a product that has only been available for 6months!

Je crois que beaucoup d’admins de forums s’occupent de trop des interactions “quotidiennes” de leurs membres et ratent souvent de grandes possibilités de faire évoluer leur site. C’est du au fait qu’ils sont trop impliqués émotionnellement lorsqu’ils traitent avec des membres, qu’ils disent que leur forum ne couvre pas certains sujets car ils n’en valent pas la peine, qu’ils ne tirent pas parti des nouvelles formes de marketing (twitter/facebook, …)
Q: Quels sont les sites que tu visites pour le fun et la relaxation ?
En-dehors de vbulletin.com et les sites que je surveille, j’aime evo.co.uk vu que je suis un féru d’automobiles et que la qualité du contenu de ce site n’a pas d’égal.
Je trouve que mashable.com est une bonne ressource. J’aime aussi theadminzone.com et webmasterworld.com pour en apprendre plus.
Q: Qu'est-ce que tu sais maintenant que tu aurais souhaité savoir il y a 10 ans ?
Les cours de l’action Google. J Plus sérieusement, pas grand chose. Nous apprenons constamment de nouvelles choses et être déçu que tu aurais du les apprendre plus tôt signifie ton but n’est pas d’apprendre plus.
Q: Connais-tu notre site de support francais et si oui, qu'en pense tu ? des conseils ?
Pour être honnête, je ne suis pas familier du site mais je continue à apprendre un tas de choses. Je l’ai visité quand tu me l’as mentionné et je l’aime beaucoup. Il a un très beau skin vB4 je trouve. Je n’ai pas réellement de conseil pour le moment, vous avez l’air de faire un beau boulot. C’est vraiment un forum actif. C’est formidable de voir une telle communauté de support pour les utilisateurs francophones de vBulletin et pour moi, il démontre bien la grande valeur des forums comme ressource technique et support de réseau.
Q: Quel à été ton chemin pour arriver à intégrer l'équipe de internetbrands.com et pourquoi à tu décider de participer à ce projet?
J’ai commence comme gestionnaire de communauté sur les forums cites précédemment. Je suis vraiment un grand “fan” des forums et en particulier vBulletin (en-dehors du travail sur le programme en lui-même, j’adore vbulletin). Dans ce rôle, j’ai aide dans le deployment de vBulletin sur +/- 50 de ces sites (ils utilisent tous des programmes de plateforme différents), tout comme aider à l’expansion de notre produit, guider dans les initiatives marketing et de communication, et s’assurer que les choses se déroulent le façon la plus harmonieuse qu’il soit.
J’ai eu la chance qu’on m’offre la possibilité de travailler sur vBulletin et rien ne pouvait me rendre plus heureux que de travailler que quelque chose que j’adore. J’espère utiliser beaucoup de choses que j’ai appris sur les forums, tout comme mon expérience dans le développement de produits pour améliorer l’expérience que nous donnons à nos clients.
Q: Un addon est-il prévu ? (Galerie ?!)
Si je regarde vBulletin, je crois qu’il y a des possibilités d’extension de nos fonctionnalités existantes.
Les galeries photos sont probablement la plus grande possibilité. Je sais que les galeries sont critiques pour beaucoup de communautés et ajoutent un élément supplémentaire à la communauté en créant un nouvel addon. Cependant, tout est question de priorité et je trouve les galeries très importantes mais pas la plus importante pour le moment.
Q: Comment gère tu une équipe ?
Pour la plupart, je les laisse se gérer elles-mêmes. J’ai la chance de travailler avec des gens capables et ma gestion est limitée à simplement s’assurer qu’elles ont les outils pour faire leur travail et s’en sortir toute seule. Tout le monde peut avoir des problèmes ou prendre parfois le mauvais chemin et je pense que le rôle du gestionnaire est d’encourager les discussions ouvertes afin d’aider à solutionner les problèmes et aider à comprendre quels objectifs nous essayons d’atteindre. Parfois, quand les problèmes sont très sérieux, je pense qu’il est important de se retrousser les manches et montrer l’exemple pour s’assurer que vous connaissez les tâches quotidiennes que vos équipes doivent effectuées.
Q: Quel est la première chose que tu fasse en te levant et la dernière en te couchant ?
Ce sont les mêmes. Regardez mes e-mails.
Q: On parle de plus en plus de IPB, qu'en pense tu ?
Je pense que c’est un bon programme. J’ai eu la chance d’utiliser plusieurs types de programmes différents pour un forum en tant qu’admin, beaucoup d’entre eux sont bons. Malheureusement, je n’ai pas utilise IPB mais j’aime l’utiliser comme simple utilisateur. J’aime leur système de photos en particulier. Vu que j’adore les forums, j’apporte une grande importance à la “progression” des forums et à leur évolution avec l’Internet. Je trouve qu’ils ont un plus grand rôle à jouer dans l’Internet que le rôle qu’on leur donne souvent et avoir un environnement difficile et compétitif est critique pour s’assurer que les forums font effectivement une “progression”.
Q: Quel est ton hack favoris ? un fais par toi et un qui n'est pas de toi !
C’est comme choisir son enfant favori. Je vais en choisir plusieurs si je peux.
Je trouve le hack “Thank you” très bien car il est extrêmement simple. Tout comme le “Gestionnaire de sous-forums”.
Le hack iTrader est vraiment très utile (et populaire) sur les sites que je surveille.
Q: Des changements sont-ils prévu sur vBulletin.org ?
Nous n’avons aucun changement drastique de prévu pour le moment. Nous voulons le maintenir comme il est pour le moment. Le site va bientôt passer à vBulletin 4. Comme je passe plus de temps à essayer de comprendre cette communauté et à comment nous pouvons les servir mieux, il pourrait y avoir des changements.
Q: Quel sont t'es livres, films, musiques, jeux, nourriture favorite ?
Livres, j’aime “This I believe”. Je le trouve vraiment réfléchi et c’est fascinant de comprendre ce en quoi les gens croient. J’ai aussi Homage à Catalonia de George Orwell.
Films, Le Parrain 1 et 2. En films récents, “Into the wild”, “Gran Torino”, “Lost in Translation”, “Lantana”, et j’aime la série des films français “Taxi”.
Musique, Cela varie d’un jour à l’autre et ça peut être éclectique. Les Beatles sont en tête de liste. D’autres seraient De La Soul, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, New Order ou alors BB King , Camile, Cubanismo, Lupe Fiasco, Ben Harper, Atmosphere, The Cat Empire…..
Jeux, j’aime l’aspect social de jouer à des jeux.J’aime tout, depuis des jeux de sociétés comme Puerto Rico jusqu’à un jeu comme Canasta. Pour moi, le plus important, ce sont les personnes avec qui tu es, plus que le jeu lui-même. Par ailleurs, j’admets que j’aime la compétition et je suis mauvais perdant.
Nourriture, tout ! Particulièrement ce qui est cuit au barbecue et ce qui contient des pâtes.
Q: Ou te voit tu dans 10 ans ?
Pas certain. Je crois que ma réponse sera erronée quoi que je te réponde. Si tu me l’avais demandé 10 ans auparavant, je t’aurais dit que je serais à Los Angeles en train de travailler sur des forums. J’adore cependant aider les gens et essayer d’en obtenir le meilleur, et j’adore l’industrie Internet. C'est incroyablement passionnant et à ce stade, c’est heureusement quelque chose qui englobe ces deux aspects mais à une plus grande échelle.
Q: Si tu étais le directeur de Internet Brands, que changerais-tu ?
Je voudrais que nous soyons plus agressif dans le suivi des tendances de l’usage d’Internet. Nous sommes doué pour identifier les compagnies qui sont à la pointe dans leur catégorie respective sur l’Internet et à les intégrer. Je voudrais nous voir plus impliqué à être à la pointe. Je pense que nous avons beaucoup de connaissances, basées sur nos expériences d’acquisition de ces compagnies et je pense que c’est la connaissance et l’expérience que nous pouvons influencer pour accélérer le développement Internet vers un environnement plus sémantique.
Q: Pourquoi n'y a t-il pas encore de site vBulletin Francais Officiel ?
Nous avons beaucoup de marches qui pourraient bénéficier de leur propre site official. Le site francophone est dans le haut de notre liste, nous avons beaucoup de clients francophones enthousiastes et ce serait bien de pouvoir les servir dans un cadre amélioré. Je voudrais y arriver, cependant, je ne sais pas quand cela sera. Actuellement, nous nous sommes consacrés corps et âme au développement de notre produit vBulletin. Dans le futur, nous consacrerons plus de temps à trouver comment nous pouvons supporter les zones régionales.

Quand j’étais à l’école supérieure, mon prof de musique (qui m’a enseigné la batterie pendant 2 ans) a appelé mes parents pour leur dire ces mots-ci : Votre fils n’a pas de musicalité et n’a aucun rythme. Le coeur brisé, mon souhait le plus cher de devenir le prochain Bernard Purdie s’est évaporé devant moi. Je pense au soulagement de nos voisins.

J’espère que tout le monde est excité comme moi à propos de vB 4.0.4. Je crois que ce sera un grand pas en avant dans vBulletin 4.

Q: Can you give us a brief bio ?
My name is Adrian – I come from a small dairy farm in Tasmania, Australia, am 26 years old. I have worked for Internet Brands for 2 years, previously I worked at Ford Motor Company in Australia as a Product Development Engineer, previous to that I worked in manufacturing as a maintenance supervisor overseeing the operation of lots of big machines. I have administrated a large vbulletin forum for about 5 years, and used the product for an even longer period as a user.
Q: What activities do you do enjoy for relaxation ?
I love the outdoors, any activity that involves being out there “in it”, I enjoy. Travelling, swimming, hiking, motorcycle riding are some of my favorites though. When indoors I enjoy cooking (and eating!), listening to music and watching a good movie or Formula 1
Q: Can you summarize your educational experience for us ?
I have a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, as well as Bachelor degree in Business. I also have a trade certification in CNC machining – it has no relevance to vbulletin whatsoever, but it means I can whip up some shiny aluminium parts J. I went to the “school of hard knocks” to learn how to manage forums and social marketing.
Q: You describe what you do on a daily and/or weekly basis ?
I am not sure you could describe what I do. (Don’t tell my boss that though!!!) I suppose it is just a “facilitator”. I need to ensure that our customer service and development teams are working towards objectives that our customers see as being valuable, and also will be seen as being valuable in the future too.
Q: What is your role within the internetbrands.com team ?
I help with the operations on vbulletin. I also oversee the communities on about 90 automotive forums that are owned and operated by Internet Brands.

Q: What are the common mistakes you see Forum Administrators making ?
Strategy. Not taking a step back, and understanding the direction of their forum/website. What are they trying to achieve? And subsequently, how does every action they make help achieve that?
I think a lot of forum admins get far too caught up in the “day to day” interaction of their members, and often miss great opportunities for their site to grow. This goes for being too emotionally involved when dealing with members, saying their forum won’t cover certain topics because they don’t think it is worthwhile, not leveraging newer forms of marketing (twitter/facebook etc.).
Q: What Websites do you visit for fun and relaxation ?
Outside of vbulletin.com and the other sites I oversee, I enjoy evo.co.uk as I am a bit of an car enthusiast, and the quality of the content there is without peer. I find mashable.com a great resource, I also like theadminzone.com and webmasterworld.com to learn more from, and I find to be great communities on their own accord.
Q: What do you know now that you would have known 10 years ago ?
Google’s stock price =D. In all seriousness, not a lot, we always learn new things, and to be disappointed that you should have learnt it earlier means you aren’t focusing on learning more.
Q: Do you know our french support site and if yes, what do you think about it ? Some advice ?
I am not familiar with it to be honest – but I am still learning a lot of things. I did check it out when you mentioned it, I like it a lot, it has a really nice vB4 skin I think! I can’t think of any advice currently, it looks like you are doing a great job, it definably seems like an active forum! It is really great to see such a supportive community for fellow French vBulletin users, and to me epitomizes the real great value of forums as a technical resource and “support network”.
Q: What was your path to get to integrate the team internetbrands.com and why you decided to participate in this project?
Well I started as a community manager on the aforementioned automotive forums, I am a really “big fan” of forums, and in particular vbulletin (outside of working on the software, I do love it!). Being in that role, I helped with rolling out of vbulletin software on about 50 of those sites (they all used different software platforms), as well as helping scope the expansion of our feature set, drive marketing and community initiatives, and just ensure things are working as harmoniously as possible. I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to work on vbulletin, and I couldn’t be happier to work on something that I really love. I hope to use a lot of the things that I learnt running the forum sites, as well as my experience in working in product development to improve the experience we give our customers.
Q: An addon is he expected soon ? (gallery ?!)
If I look at vbulletin, I think there are a number of opportunities to expand our existing feature set. Galleries is probably one of the biggest opportunities. I know firsthand that galleries are critical to a lot of communities and add an extra element to a community, creating further addon’s however is all about priorities, and I would see galleries as being very important, but not the most important at this point in time J
Q: How do you manage a team ?
I like to think that I let them (for the most part) manage themselves. I am fortunate enough to work with some really capable people, and I feel that my management is limited to just ensuring that they have the tools to do their job, and getting out of their way. Everyone can get bogged down on issues, or sometimes even start to head down the wrong path, and I think a managers role is to encourage open discussion to help solve the problems, and help them understand what objectives we are trying to achieve. Sometimes when the issues are serious enough, I also think it is important to roll up the sleeves and lead by example too, even just to ensure you have an understanding of what daily tasks your team-mates have to go through.
Q: What is the first thing you do when you wake up and the last before going to bed ?
Both are the same. Check my emails. =DWe speak more and more about IPB, what do you think about it ?

I think it is a great software. I have been fortunate enough to use lots of different types of forum software as an admin, a lot of them are really good! IPB I unfortunately haven’t, but I like using it as a user, I particularly like their gallery system. Being that I love forums, I care a great deal about forum’s “progressing” and evolving with the Internet, I feel they have a much bigger part to play in the Internet than they are often given credit for, and having a strong, competitive environment is critical to ensure that forums do indeed “progress”.
Q: Which hack is your favourite ? Why ?
That’s like choosing your favorite child! I will choose a couple of them if I can.
I like the “Thank You” plugin is great because it is incredibly simple… and effective. As is “Sub-Forum Manager”.
The iTrader plugin is really useful (and popular) on the sites that I oversee as well.
Q: What is the future of vBulletin.org ? Changes are planned ?
At this point, we don’t have any drastic changes planned. We intend on maintaining it as it is for the mean time. The site will be upgraded to vBulletin 4 at a point in time. As I spend more time understanding the community there, and how we can serve them better, there may be changes that get implemented J
Q: What are your favourite books, movies, music, games, food ?
Books, I really like “This I believe”, I find it really reflective, and it is fascinating to understand what people believe in. I also like Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell.
Movies, Godfather 1 and 2. Although more recent favorites include “Into the wild”, “Gran Torino”, “Lost in Translation”, “Lantana”, and I love the French “Taxi” movie series too.

Q: Where do you think you will be in 10 years ?
Not sure. I think, with me, whatever response I give will probably be wrong. If you asked me 10 years ago, the last place I would have told you I would be is in Los Angeles working on forums. I do, however, really enjoy helping people, and trying to get “the best” out of them, and I do love the Internet industry, it is incredibly exciting and fast paced, so at this stage, hopefully something that encompasses both of those aspects, but in a greater capacity.
Q: If you were director to internetbrands, what would you change ?
I would like to see us be more aggressive in following trends in usage on the Internet. We are great at identifying companies that are on the forefront of their respective categories on the Internet, and integrating them. I would like to see us be more involved in actually being on the forefront to begin with – I think we have a lot of knowledge built, based on our experience with acquiring these companies, and I think it is knowledge and experience that we can leverage to accelerate the Internet’s development to a more semantic environment.
Q: Why is there not yet vBulletin French Official site?
We have a lot of markets that would benefit from their own official site, a French one is definitely near the top of our list, we have a lot of really enthusiastic French customers, and it would be great if we could serve them in an improved fashion. I would like to, at some point, to get to that, I don’t know when that would be however. Currently we have been focusing wholeheartedly on the further development of our vbulletin core product, in the future we will definitely spend more time on how we can support regional areas in a stronger fashion.

Q: Can you tell us something about you that we don't already know ?
When I was in Grade 10 at high school, my music teacher (who had taught me drums for 2 years), called my parents in to tell them – in his words “Your son is musically challenged, and has no rhythm”. Heartbroken, my lifelong desire to be the next Bernard Purdie evaporated in front of me, I think to the relief of our neighbors though.
Q: Do you want to add something ?
I hope everyone is as excited as I am about 4.0.4! I think it is going to be a strong step forward with vBulletin4.
Q: Give us exclusivity, something that nobody knows about VB4!
There are over 12,000 sites out there running on it already, including VWvotex, the 15th largest forum out there. Which I find amazing for a product that has only been available for 6months!
